Members of the Oak Park Fire Department said they were called to the scene on Saturday after a man’s pet ball python got loose while they were riding a CTA Green Line train.
After slipping away, the beloved pet used its newfound freedom to take a short tour of the train car.
“Not a typical rescue, but a memorable one for sure,” a spokesperson for the department said in a Facebook post on Monday.
According to crews, the nosey python had an apparent interest in what was making the train run and slithered its way into a control box panel on the train.
Luckily, the “behind the scenes” look ended abruptly after crews arrived and they were able to open up the control box and pull the inquisitive serpent to safety.
Once wrapped around safe hands, crews returned the snake, named “Lucius,” after the character Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter books, to his owner, who appeared to be dressed up as a pirate.
“We were able to open the box, secure the snake and return Lucius to a very appreciative pirate, his owner,” the post read.
In the post sharing details about the incident, fire crews can be seen posing with Lucious and its owner following the rescue.
