The burglary took place on Wednesday along Marin Valley Drive. According to the Novato Police Department, detectives received a tip containing clear surveillance video showing the suspect vehicle, a yellow Mini Cooper, with a visible license plate.
On Saturday night, at around 11 p.m., a patrol sergeant spotted the Mini Cooper near South Novato Boulevard and Redwood Boulevard. Officers followed the vehicle as it circled the neighborhood before stopping in a 7-Eleven parking lot. Police said open containers of alcohol were observed inside the vehicle along with occupants.
Investigators reviewed the surveillance footage again and confirmed that all three individuals in the vehicle matched the suspects involved in the earlier burglary.
Nineteen-year-old Arturo Mercado was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy and acting as an accessory to a crime. Miguel Mercado, 18, and Freddie Nunez Guzman, 19, were both arrested on suspicion of auto burglary and conspiracy.
Police on Monday credited the swift arrests to the high-quality video footage provided by a community member and encouraged residents to join the city’s voluntary Camera Registry Program to aid in future investigations.
