Flames erupt after car crashes into San Jose post office

(KRON) – Flames erupted following a car slamming into a United States Post Office in San Jose, according to authorities. 

The incident occurred at the United States Post Office Almaden Valley Station on Crown Boulevard. The San Jose Fire Department, San Jose Police Department and federal investigators were on scene.

SJFD Battalion Chief Josh Staley said crews were alerted to the fire around 2:30 a.m. The chief said initially the fire was a one-alarm that progressed into a two-alarm, which means the fire needed more crews and equipment to tame.

San Jose crews told sources that the cause of the fire is still under investigation; however, it seems that the car crashing into the building began the flames.

According to authorities, the front of the building, which is the office, was severely damaged after the crash. The rear of the building, which is the mailroom, has some damage as well, according to authorities. Staley said the flames caused a loss of mail, and there may be a closure of the post office due to the investigation. 

At this time, there are no reported injuries, per authorities.
