Tiny piglet found roaming through Durham County auctioned to new home

DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) – A tiny piglet who was found wandering alone through Durham County a few weeks ago is now heading to her new forever home.

The piglet named Lily, who’s estimated to be between six and eight weeks old, was sold in an auction event held in Rougemont on Thursday evening, the Durham County Sheriff’s Office wrote

Alesja Daehnrich, co-founder of the Blind Spot Animal Sanctuary, received a call about the piglet from the sheriff’s office.

“They called us right before July 4, and they said they picked up a stray piglet that has been roaming and has been on the loose since June 25 at least, probably longer,” she said.

Daehnrich said it’s surprising that a piglet this young even survived on her own.

“I’m surprised on many levels,” she said. “One is just how small she was and has been on her own for almost a week or two, that she avoided cars, that she avoided predators, that she avoided dogs and we had a lot of storms as well, so she survived all of these elements.”

Lily arrived at the sanctuary in rough shape.

“I’ve never seen so many lice on a piglet in my entire life,” Daehnrich added. “She was covered, so she must have come from very poor conditions.”

With lots of love, and plenty of playtime in the pool, Lily was healthy, thriving and even had adopters ready to take her home.

“They are smitten,” Daehnrich said. She absolutely will live in luxury.”

Now that Lily’s found her home, Daehnrich hopes the other pigs who live at the sanctuary will be next.

“We have adult pigs, we also have five piglets, they are about the same age and size as Lily,” she said “They’re extraordinarily social. Very, very sweet. They will climb all over you and sit in your lap.”

“We hope to find them really, really good homes.”
