Texas job market hits record highs; Amarillo unemployment up by 0.1%

AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — The Texas Workforce Commission reported that the civilian labor force reached a record-high total of 15,850,100, marking 60 of 62 months of growth.

According to the TWC, data shows Texas added 10,800 people over the month to the labor force and added 237,800 over the year. Data states that Texas added 198,300 jobs over the year for an annual nonfarm growth rate of 1.4% which outpaced the national growth rate by 0.3%.

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate registered at 4% after decreasing 0.1% percentage points over the month, according to the TWC. Amarillo’s unemployment rate rose 0.1% over the month to a rate of 3.1%; however is tied for the second lowest with San Angelo.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate is the number of unemployed as a percentage of the labor force, which is the sum of the employed and unemployed. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said that “people are classified as unemployed if they do not have a job, have actively looked for work in the prior 4 weeks, and are currently available for work” are considered unemployed.

“The increase in the civilian labor force and the drop in the unemployment rate highlight continued strength in the Texas economy,” said TWC Chairman Bryan Daniel. “TWC provides a number of tools for both job seekers and employers as we continue to grow the Texas labor force.”

According to the TWC, the Private Education and Health Services industry had the largest over-the-month increase after adding 6,900 jobs in June. Leisure and Hospitality added 3,000 jobs while Information added 1,000. The construction industry grew by 2.4%, according to TWC, which outperformed the national rate by 0.9%.

TWC noted that the Midland Metropolitan Statistical Area had the lowest unemployment rate among Texas MSAs, with a not seasonally adjusted rate of 3%, followed by Amarillo and San Angelo.
