The crash happened around 7:15 p.m. near the Highway 1 and Highway 129 interchange. The driver, a 59-year-old man from San Jose, veered off the northbound side of Highway 1 at the time of the crash, according to the California Highway Patrol.
“For unknown reasons, the driver failed to maintain control of the Harley Davidson and allowed the Harley Davidson to exit the roadway,” CHP said. “The Harley Davidson overturned, causing both parties to be ejected from the motorcycle.”
The passenger, a 65-year-old woman from San Jose, suffered major injuries. Paramedics attempted to resuscitate the woman, but she was ultimately pronounced dead at the scene. The driver also suffered major injuries and was taken to the Natividad Medical Center in Salinas for treatment.
Alcohol and/or drugs are suspected as a possible cause of the crash. The crash remains under investigation.
The driver was arrested in connection to the crash and remains in custody. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact CHP.
