Pennsylvania officials celebrate 30 years of underground fuel storage protection fund

CAMP HILL, Pa. (WHTM) – Officials with the Shapiro administration on Thursday celebrated the Underground Storage Tank Indemnification Fund’s (USTIF) 30th anniversary.

The USTIF is a special fund and is described as a “unique program that helps clean up leaks from underground fuel tanks and protects the environment, business owners, and communities across the Commonwealth so that these leaks do not turn into long-term problems.”

Gas stations and other businesses that store fuel and other regulated substances in tanks buried underground may experience tank leaks. The USTIF fund operates similarly to an insurance company, providing a way for gas stations or site owners to pay to clean up areas, fix tanks, and mitigate damage caused by a potential leak.

Those in attendance at Thursday’s celebration in Camp Hill included Pennsylvania Insurance Commissioner Michael Humphreys and officials from the Department of Environmental Protection.
