PIAA takes first step to add shot clock to Pennsylvania high school hoops

(WHTM) — A shot clock could be coming to the Pennsylvania high school hardcourt by the end of the decade.

At Wednesday’s meeting, the PIAA Board of Directors approved the first reading of a rule implementing a shot clock for varsity and junior varsity high school basketball.

It had been recommended by the Basketball Steering Committee on June 17.

The PIAA board must vote on the rule twice more to adopt it. If fully approved, the shot clock rule will begin for the 2028-2029 school year.

Meeting minutes from the steering committee meeting, one member discussed “the inevitability of the change” and briefly considered an “ambitious” timeline of implementing the rule for 2026-27.

The rule would add a 35-second shot clock, visible at each end of the court, as per NFHS Rule 2-14.

According to the PIAA, 31 states have either adopted or are piloting the use of a shot clock.
