The project will replace the weight-restricted Walker Road bridge over Piney Run between Park Royal Drive and Walker Mill Road. The bridge was built nearly 100 years ago and is limited to vehicles under 10 tons and is often prone to flooding during major storms.
The project will extend the bridge to two lanes with a sidewalk on the southbound side. It will also increase the opening under the bridge to better withstand flooding.
An estimated 4,800 cars go over the bridge every day.
From 10 p.m. on Friday, July 18, until 9 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 1, the Walker Road bridge over Piney Road will be closed.
Traffic will be detoured via Colvin Run Road, Route 7 (Leesburg Pike), Springvale Road (Route 674) and Georgetown Pike back to Walker Road.
The bridge project is scheduled for completion in late 2025.
