2 men indicted in connection with 900-pound meth bust in Minneapolis

Two men are now indicted following a massive meth bust in Minneapolis earlier this month.

Joel Casas-Santiago, 44, and Guillermo Mercado-Chaparro, 46, are both charged in federal court with one count of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine.

Mercado-Chaparro is also charged with illegal reentry by a removed alien.

According to court documents, the men were arrested in south Minneapolis on July 7, five days after an undercover officer placed a GPS tracker on Mercado-Chaparro’s pickup truck.

Nearly 900 pounds of meth were found in two vehicles driven by the men, one of the largest meth seizures in Minnesota history.

“A 900-pound haul like this doesn’t just show intent to distribute. It shows intent to poison entire communities,” acting U.S. Attorney Joseph Thompson said in a statement. “We will not let Minnesota become a distribution hub for cartel-scale operations. This prosecution is just the beginning.”

The two also face first-degree drug sale charges in Hennepin County.
