Are dogs allowed on Chicago beaches?

CHICAGO — The 2025 Chicago beach season is underway! As residents and visitors flock to the lakeshore, many dog owners may wonder if their pets can accompany them to the beach.

With that said, it’s important to know the city’s guidelines before you pack up the leash and sunscreen.

So, are dogs allowed on Chicago beaches? The simple answer is no.

According to the Chicago Park District, dogs are prohibited on the general public beaches in the city. You can get ticketed for it.

However, there are Dog-Friendly Areas (DFAs) at two lakefront beaches — provided owners have the proper tags and follow all rules.

What beach can I take my dog?

Montrose Dog Beach

• Location: Northwest corner of Montrose Beach, located at 601 West Lawrence Avenue
• Hours: Typically 6 AM–11 PM (Park District hours)
• Features: Off‑leash play, cleanup station, dog-wash area, fenced boundary
• Requirements: DFA (Dog Friendly Area) tag — which indicates your dog’s vaccinations are up-to-date and they’ve passed a recent fecal test

Belmont Harbor Dog Beach

• Location: At Belmont Harbor, located east of Lake Shore Drive at north end of Belmont Harbor
• Hours: 6 AM–11 PM
• Features: Off‑leash play, fully fenced area
• Requirements: DFA tag

Because of the strict leash laws in Chicago, it’s important to be aware of the guidelines surrounding city beaches.

Chicago beaches are open daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., when lifeguards are on duty, until Sept. 1.
