(WHTM) — Drivers may start to see some new equipment when traveling on the Turnpike.

The Turnpike is putting up new open road tolling gantries all over Pennsylvania, including one in Clay Township, Lancaster County.

Open road tolling launched east of Reading and on the northeast extension earlier this year. It will replace the traditional tollbooth and allow drivers to be tolled while traveling at highway speeds.

“The flexibility of the interchanges really allows for more access,” said Marissa Orbanek, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission’s press secretary. “You don’t have to go through the traditional toll plaza type configuration where there are eight lanes allowed to make a much easier, more flexible for the customers. It’s easier to operate on the Turnpike side as well.”

Construction and testing will occur before the state-wide launch of open road tolling in 2027.
