Man shot in exchange of gunfire with authorities in western MN charged with attempted murder, assault

A man who was shot by police during an exchange of gunfire on July 9 has been charged.

36-year-old Todd Ole Burris faces two counts of attempted first-degree murder of a peace officer, two counts of first-degree assault against a peace officer, two counts of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon and one count of fleeing.

Deputies responded to a domestic disturbance in rural Becker County around 5:36 p.m. on July 9. A woman reported that Burris assaulted her, slashed her tires, and took her handgun.

Authorities tried to pull Burris over, but he sped off after the initial traffic stop, according to a criminal complaint.

Burris was later found at a rest stop in Frazee in Otter Tail County. Court documents state that Burris pointed a handgun at law enforcement, who shot him. Authorities stated that Burris had been shot in both legs.

The officers were identified Monday as Becker County Lt. Luke Sweere and Detroit Lakes Officer Philip Vaughn.

Investigators found a black semi-automatic pistol with the action locked open inside Burris’ vehicle. There were also unspent cartridge casings found on the ground outside the driver’s side door.

Court documents state that both squad vehicles were damaged by the exchange of gunfire.

Burris was brought to the hospital for his injuries and has since been booked into Otter Tail County Jail. 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS has requested his booking photo.
