RCPD talks car burglaries, Narcan and planned events

TOPKEA (KSNT) – Riley County Police Director Brian Peete joined the 27 News Morning show on Tuesday to discuss car burglaries, upcoming events and officers carrying Narcan.

Peete said that thanks to the Riley County Health Department, the police department has received a batch of Narcan that officers and staff will now carry. Kansas lawmakers previously approved of a new law that allows first responders to gain better access to the potentially life-saving anti-overdose drug.

27 News also asked him about recent car burglaries in Manhattan.

“We’ve always had a trend, unfortunately, of ups and downs of car burglaries, folks breaking into cars,” Peete said. “Mainly, it’s because people aren’t locking their vehicles. So we asked everyone who’s out there, just keep your vehicle locked and keep your valuables or possessions kind of hidden.”

Peete said there will be an upcoming event called Custard with a Cop that will be held from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on July 23 at Freddie’s in Manhattan. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Special Olympics.

Peete said the RCPD will also be participating in the Battle of the Badges blood drive that will be held on July 24 and 25 at St. Thomas Moore Church located at 2900 Kimball Avenue.

“We can’t forget who we serve,” Peete said. “We have to be part of the community, not forcing our will on the community. And it’s just service, it’s just something that we all adhere to, something that we believe we were born to do, a calling for us.”
