Pennsylvania lawmaker proposes allowing Sunday car sales

(WHTM)– Looking to buy a car in Pennsylvania? Well, don’t go to the dealership on Sunday.

While it is currently against the law for car dealerships to sell cars on Sunday, a Pennsylvania lawmaker is looking to change that.

State Rep. Tim Brennan (D-29) says he plans to reintroduce legislation that would allow normal vehicle business dealers to sell motor vehicles on Sundays. The memo

says these businesses would also be permitted to stay open on Sundays and finalize sales contracts.

According to the memo, less than half of the 50 states, including Pennsylvania, prohibit Sunday sales of vehicles by licensed dealers.

This is one of the state’s few remaining “Blue Laws,” which prohibit activities on Sundays. Last week, Governor Shapiro signed a bill officially repealing the ban on Sunday hunting.

Pennsylvania also permitted Fine Wine & Good Spirits stores to sell alcohol on Sundays in 2016, per the memo.

According to Carbrain, the law, like other Blue Laws, has religious origins. While Sunday is widely considered a day of rest, Rep. Brennan argues that repealing the law will keep Pennsylvania’s car dealerships competitive with other states.

The bill has not yet been submitted for introduction.
