Downtown Indianapolis transforming for WNBA All-Star Weekend

INDIANAPOLIS — This weekend, the biggest stars in the WNBA will head to Indianapolis. The WNBA All-Star Game will tip off in just five days, and while many will head to the game Saturday, there’s still plenty to do outside of Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

Preparations are underway inside the Indiana Convention Center for WNBA Live — a two-day event offering meet and greets, panel discussions, contests and more — all to celebrate basketball and the players at the top of their game.

“We’re all coming together to roll out the orange carpet for fans across the country this weekend,” said Morgan Snyder, senior director of public relations for Visit Indy.

Snyder said WNBA Live is just one of many experiences designed for fans outside of the all-star game itself. Because the game was bound to sell out, and it did, Pacers Sports & Entertainment CEO Mel Raines said it was important to plan more events so every fan feels included.

“The dribble Saturday morning for 2,500 kids, WNBA Live at the Convention Center, Fever Fest, and then Friday’s skills challenge so that fans who may not be able to get a ticket for Saturday have a lot of other chances to be part of the weekend,” Raines said.

Tickets are still available for the very first Fever Fest — a music and comedy show in White River State Park that ends with a watch party for the all-star game. Throughout the weekend, downtown Indianapolis is expected to be filled with live music, photo opportunities on Georgia Street and Monument Circle and fireworks.

“There’s over 20 places around the city that’s going to have a ‘hoops pass’ QR code outside,” Snyder said. “You scan the QR code, check in, and you’re entered to win prizes throughout the weekend — from stickers, t-shirts, even basketballs signed by WNBA and Indiana Fever legends.”

For many fans, seeing such a huge spotlight shined on both the league and Indianapolis is already exciting — even before these celebrations tip off.

“I think what the WNBA is doing is awesome for women’s sports,” said WNBA fan Jami. “It’s nice to see what is the future for girls growing up and there is hope to be a famous player.”

“We have such an incredible opportunity to enjoy that ride, that momentum and the energy of Indianapolis truly as the epicenter of women in sports,” Snyder said.
