Crews rescue man trapped in grain bin in Hancock County

HANCOCK COUNTY, Ind. — First responders rescued a man who was trapped in a grain bin in Hancock County Monday afternoon.

County officials told FOX59/CBS4 that crews responded to a farm located along County Roads 300 West and 200 North around 3:47 p.m. When emergency personnel arrived at the scene, they located a man trapped in a bin that was partially filled with soybeans.

In a Facebook post, the Sugar Creek Township Fire Department confirmed that its crews — alongside firefighters from the Greenfield Fire Territory and Buck Creek Township Fire Department — executed a high-angle rope rescue with a bucket truck to free the man from the bin.

Per SCTFD, crews helped the man down a ladder after they got him out of the grain bin. He was transported to a local hospital in stable condition around 5 p.m.

SCTFD reported that its crews freed the man from the grain bin just 35 minutes after they first made contact with him. The agency called Monday’s bin rescue “a testament to the team’s training, communication and effectiveness.”

SCTFD indicated that survival rates for grain bin entrapment victims is estimated to be somewhere between 5% and 40%.
