NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a deputy was allegedly assaulted over the weekend.

According to OPSO officials, the incident happened on Sunday, July 13, inside the Orleans Justice Center.

Details of the incident were not released but OPSO officials said the situation was quickly brought under control and that the deputy received immediate medical attention.

The inmate was also evaluated by both medical and mental health personnel.

OPSO extends its sincere gratitude to the deputy involved and to all deputies working inside the Orleans Justice Center who continue to put their safety on the line to keep the jail and the city secure.

Sheriff Susan Hutson, senior leadership and investigative personnel have initiated comprehensive reviews and if appropriate, said OPSO officials, the inmate will be rebooked on additional charges.

Women make up over 70% of the deputies in our jail. Even while facing severe understaffing, they show up every day and night with unwavering dedication. Their strength and service are essential to the operation of this facility, and we remain committed to fighting for increased pay and better working conditions for all our staff.
