“I wanted to get back at this stage of my career. Get back to having fun, get back to the sidelines. I want to lead young men using football to teach them life lessons that will carry them throughout there manhood from being a husband, a father. That’s what I’m looking forward to and that’s the reason I made the decision,” Byrd said.
Byrd served as assistant principal at his alma mater, C.E. Byrd High School. It’s a place that will forever be special to him and his family.
“During the last seven years I was able to put a diploma in my daughters hand when she graduated in the class of 2022, that was special. My wife is a counselor at Byrd high school and honestly if it wasn’t for her I’d probably be coaching a little bit sooner than right now,” Byrd stated.
Byrd is taking over a program that is one of the smallest in class 1A and wants this team to celebrate the accomplishments they’ve worked so hard for.
“We had nine seventh graders at workout yesterday, for this school that’s incredible, you want to celebrate that,” Byrd said. “Jeremy Fisher deadlifted 380 pounds, we celebrated that and I appreciate all the people on social media for sharing that post, those are the kind of things we want to celebrate.”
Being able to achieve goals and celebrate as a program is important, especially for the players and the community of Plain Dealing.
“I just want them to take some tools away from there experience playing football here and representing this community that has kind of opened up there arms to not only me but to this entire brand new coaching staff,” Byrd stated. “That’s what I want them to take away and I want to influence them in a positive away.”
