Atlanta man identified as drowning victim at West Point Lake

LAGRANGE, Ga. (WRBL) — An Atlanta man has been identified as the victim of a Sunday afternoon drowning incident at West Point Lake.

Police say Deshun Mayfield, 32, was recovered from the waters near McGee Bridge Park on Sunday.

A report of the incident states Troup County police received a call at 12:43 p.m. saying an adult male had gone underwater and did not resurface. Police say local emergency personnel were immediately sent to the area. The Troup County Fire Department Dive Team located Mayfield from the water a short time later.

This is the third drowning at West Point Lake since July 1, 2025.

The sheriff’s office is reminding visitors of the lake to take extra precautions when swimming in large bodies of water, even advising experienced swimmers to use life jackets and floatation devices.
