Bloomington Groups Join National John Lewis Day of Action – ‘Good Trouble Lives On’
Film Screening Set for July 16; ‘People Have the Power’ Rally and March to Be Held July 17

Bloomington, IN — On Thursday, July 17th, Bloomington community members will join with Americans at hundreds of events nationwide to honor the legacy of Congressman John Lewis and fight back against the growing attacks on our civil and human rights. The local action in Bloomington is part of Good Trouble Lives On—a nationwide day of peaceful, nonviolent action rooted in the legacy of the Civil Rights Movement and inspired by John Lewis’s call to make “good trouble, necessary trouble.”

Bloomington 50501, the Monroe County branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the University Alliance for Racial Justice, and the League of Women Voters of Bloomington–Monroe County are jointly hosting the “People Have the Power” march and rally. Running from 5 to 7 p.m., the “People Have the Power” march and rally will take place on Thursday, July 17th outside of the Monroe County Courthouse located at 100 W. Kirkwood Ave.

Members of the public are invited to gather to demand an end to the authoritarian attacks on our freedom to vote, protest, and organize—and to stand united against efforts to criminalize our communities, roll back our rights, and slash vital public programs.

The event organizers also welcome members of the press to attend, capture, and uplift the voices of those taking peaceful action in defense of democracy. The “People Have the Power” march and rally will feature remarks from local leaders including Lisa Schubert Nowling, Jim Sims, Micol Seigel, and Russell Skiba among others.

Also, in advance of Thursday’s rally, a free screening of the film “John Lewis: Good Trouble” will be held beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 16th at First United Methodist Church located at 219 E. 4th St. This event is also open to the public.
