Staff report
Bloomington, Ind. – July 15, 2025
Community members in Bloomington will take part in the national John Lewis Day of Action this week, joining hundreds of events across the country aimed at defending civil and human rights while honoring the legacy of the late Congressman John Lewis.
The two-day local observance, organized by Bloomington 50501, the Monroe County NAACP, the University Alliance for Racial Justice, and the League of Women Voters of Bloomington–Monroe County, begins with a public film screening on Wednesday, July 16, followed by a rally and march on Thursday, July 17.
The film screening of John Lewis: Good Trouble will begin at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church, 219 E. 4th St. Admission is free and open to the public.
The main event, the “People Have the Power” march and rally, will take place Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. outside the Monroe County Courthouse at 100 W. Kirkwood Ave. Local leaders including Lisa Schubert Nowling, Jim Sims, Micol Seigel, and Russell Skiba are scheduled to speak.
The events are part of the national Good Trouble Lives On campaign, which encourages peaceful, nonviolent action in the spirit of Lewis’s call to make “good trouble, necessary trouble.” Organizers say the rally will focus on opposing authoritarian efforts to limit voting rights, suppress protest, criminalize marginalized communities, and cut public programs.d
