Scattered Sunday storms, Watching Gulf next week

LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – Showers and thunderstorms brought cooling relief to parts of Acadiana while other areas saw little rain and highs in the low and mid 90s. All rain ends this evening setting up a quiet and humid night as temperatures settle in the 70s.

Sunday will begin with a few showers around the area. We’ll likely see a break in the rain mid-morning before storms return during the afternoon hours. These widespread storms will be slow-moving and could produce a quick one or two inches of rain. This could lead to some minor flood concerns in flood-prone areas of Acadiana. Highs will generally be close to the 90 degree mark.

In the tropics, we are keeping a close watch on a stalling frontal boundary. Models are indicating that an area of low pressure could form along this front and eventually turn tropical. While this is a low chance right now, we definitely need to keep a close watch on this going through next week in case it does try to develop. Regardless of development, this will be a rainmaker for the Gulf Coast.

Locally, we will see some drier weather towards midweek thanks to high pressure settling in and Saharan dust. This will lead to temperatures in the mid 90s with feels-like temperatures around 105 degrees. By the end of next week, the weather system in the Gulf is likely to surge tropical moisture overhead, increasing our rain chances and lowering daytime highs.
