IU Health to build first hospital in West Lafayette

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — West Lafayette will soon have its very first hospital.

The Indiana University Health Board of Directors recently approved a $214 million investment that includes building West Lafayette’s first hospital within city limits.

“IU Health has brought many firsts to Tippecanoe County: the first multi-specialty clinic, the first cardiology and pediatric departments and the first urgent care. Now, we’re preparing to bring another milestone—the first hospital in West Lafayette,” said Dennis Murphy, IU Health president and chief executive officer.

The $214 million investment in the Greater Lafayette area doesn’t stop at building a new hospital. IU Health also plans to create a state-of-the-art cancer center on the Arnett Hospital campus in Lafayette along with renovating the IU Health Medical Offices on Sagamore Parkway in West Lafayette, which will add access to specialty medical care.

“Several years ago, we recognized that Greater Lafayette was on the cusp of significant growth. We planted our flag early, confident in the community’s potential and committed to being part of its future,” said Art Vasquez, president of IU Health’s West Region. “Today, we’re proud to announce the next bold step in that journey with the Greater Lafayette Community Growth Project. This is a major milestone, not just for our organization, but for our community.”

The West Lafayette hospital will offer a 24/7 emergency department, IU Health said, along with inpatient care, multiple operating rooms, a helipad for emergency transportation and advanced imaging and laboratory services.

This will be the first hospital within West Lafayette and will make IU Health the only health system to offer inpatient hospital care within the city limits.

Construction on the hospital is scheduled to begin in 2026 with an opening slated for 2028.

Meanwhile, the new cancer center will be located across the river in Lafayette on the campus of Arnett Hospital. The existing IU Health Cancer Center in Lafayette will relocate to this new state-of-the-art facility.

The new center will be a 55,000 square-foot facility with room to provide “essential infusion therapies to 32 patients simultaneously — a 23% increase over the current facility,” IU Health said.

The new cancer center will also include an oncology rapid access clinic, IU Health said, and house two linear accelerators, advanced radiation therapy technologies and precision genomics services.

Rendering of the new cancer center planned on the iu health arnett hospital campus.

IU Health said the new cancer center will begin construction in 2026 with a projected opening in 2028.

“This project represents IU Health’s commitment to growing with our community, but it isn’t just about bricks and mortar. It’s about fulfilling a promise we made years ago and meeting the needs of a growing community with care that’s close to home,” said Vasquez.
