Montgomery County neighbors react to home struck by lightning

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — On Tuesday, lightning struck a home on the 17000 block of Amity Drive in Derwood.

Michael, who lives a few doors down from the house that was struck, says he was home Tuesday evening when a big thunderstorm passed through.

“It was very, very loud,” he said. “So, my dog was scared. I was scared, too. At one point, I heard a very loud strike.”

That sound was lightning hitting his neighbor’s home.

“My first thought was if anybody was injured,” Michael said, “but luckily, no casualties. I feel sorry for the owner.”

Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Service (MCFRS) officials say the lightning hit between the garage and the first floor, which started a fire.

“We just saw all the damage that was done,” neighbor Will Wong said, “and I was shocked.”

Wong lives directly across the street from the house.

“That was really scary,” he said. “This is literally probably like 60 feet from my home.”

Wong talked with the owners Tuesday night. He says everyone is doing okay, considering what happened.

“They’re good people, and it was just a freak accident,” Wong said.

“My heart goes out to them,” Wong says the family who lives in the home is now staying with relatives.
