The shooting occurred around 10:37 a.m. in the area of Northport Loop West, just west of Interstate 880. The victim, who was not identified by police, was rushed to an area hospital where they succumbed to their gunshot injuries.
The suspected gunman, Greg White, 56, of Fremont, was detained at the scene and interviewed by detectives. White told the investigators that he had known the victim for years and considered them a friend, Fremont PD said. On the morning of the fatal shooting, White alleged that the victim attempted to carjack his RV and threatened him with a “long, sharpened copper pipe.”
According to police, White said he gave the victim several warnings to leave and shot them only after the victim advanced toward him with the pipe. A rifle and “many rounds of ammunition” were found inside White’s RV, according to authorities.
White was arrested and booked into the Santa Rita Jail for suspicion of murder.
Fremont police said they interviewed 15 witnesses, reviewed surveillance video and authored multiple search warrants for evidence in the homicide. The case was sent to the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office for charging.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Fremont Police Department Investigations Unit at 510-790-6900.
