Just after 1:45 p.m. on July 7, officers found 27-year-old Jaquan Malik Fitchett at the Bayfue Apartments after receiving reports about an unconscious individual. By the time police arrived at the scene, Fitchett had regained consciousness.
He reportedly pushed an officer and tried to flee from the area, police say.
PWCPD was able to detain him a short distance away and no officers were hurt in the altercation. Fitchett also tried giving officers false identifying information and was suspected of having drugs on his person at the time.
Officers later learned Fitchett was wanted in connection with a hit-and-run that happened on March 18 and several other ongoing investigations into property crimes.
Shortly before 7:30 a.m. on that March morning, PWCPD responded to a multi-vehicle crash in the area of Yorkshire Lane near Old Centreville Road in Manassas. There, a vehicle side-swiped a car before colliding with a second vehicle head-on.
A 48-year-old woman was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Before police arrived at the scene, Fitchett — the suspected driver of the striking vehicle — had fled from the area on foot. PWCPD later learned he was driving a stolen vehicle at the time.
A warrant was issued, leading to his eventual arrest on July 7, more than three months after the collision.
Fitchett was charged with felony hit-and-run, grand larceny, petit larceny, and driving on a revoked license for the March crash. He was additionally handed down charges for assault and battery on a law enforcement officer, identity theft, obstruction of justice, and other related charges, for his July arrest altercation.
