According to a press release from the Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD), officers have reviewed surveillance footage but have not yet identified a suspect. Law enforcement is now requesting that any member of the public who may have witnessed or heard something come forward to help.
On the Fourth of July, SLCPD was contacted around 11:21 p.m. regarding someone who had been injured during the fireworks event. A second person injured in the shooting was located soon after, and both people had non-life-threatening injuries.
Near one of the injured, police found a “small-caliber bullet.” At this time, SLCPD says that they believe the bullets were fired into the sky, then fell with enough velocity to injure the two individuals.
“We’re really lucky no one was more seriously hurt or worse,” Salt Lake City Police Deputy Chief Bill Manzanares is quoted in the release. “We need the community’s help to figure out who did this so we can hold them accountable. Firing a gun into the air like that is both reckless and incredibly dangerous.”
Detectives from the Salt Lake City Police Department believe that the person or persons who discharged the firearm might have been in the area between 500 W and 400 W, from North Temple to 100 S, outside of The Gateway shopping center itself.
SLCPD is asking those who were in the area between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. on July 4 to call police at 801-799-3000 and report if they saw any suspicious behavior or heard gunshots that night.
