Report: Dewanna Bonner signing with Phoenix Mercury

INDIANAPOLIS — Forward Dewanna Bonner is signing with the Phoenix Mercury, according to a report ESPN published Monday.

Bonner, a 37-year-old and 6-time WNBA All-Star, started the season with the Indiana Fever. She signed with Indiana as a free agent in the offseason after playing for the Connecticut Sun in 2024.

Bonner appeared in nine games for Indiana and averaged 23.1 minutes, 7.1 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.6 assists a contest. Bonner was ultimately waived by the Fever on June 25. Before she was waived Bonner had been away from the team since June 12.

“I want to sincerely thank the Indiana Fever for the opportunity to be part of the Fever franchise,” Bonner said in a news release. “Despite our shared goals and excitement heading into the season, I felt the fit did not work out and I appreciate the organization’s willingness to grant my request to move on, particularly at this point in my career. I wish the Fever great success as they continue to build around this dynamic group of young players.”

In signing with the Mercury, Bonner ensured that she will once again get to play alongside her fiancé, Alyssa Thomas. Bonner and Thomas had previously played together with the Sun.

On her career, Bonner has averaged 14.8 points, 6.1 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game. According to The Associated Press, Bonner has averaged double-figure scoring numbers in each of her 16 seasons in the WNBA.

The AP also reported that Bonner has been a full-time starter on every team she’s played for since 2012. Bonner started just three of the nine games she participated in with the Fever.

After they waived Bonner, the Fever re-signed point guard Aari McDonald, who had been with the team on a hardship contract earlier in the season. McDonald has averaged 10.3 points, 2.3 rebounds and 4.4 assist a game.

Phoenix waived Megan McConnell — the sister of Indiana Pacers point guard T.J. McConnell — last month. Megan McConnell appeared in just one game for the Mercury before she was waived. A report from Sports Illustrated indicates McConnell has been battling a knee injury this season this season.

The Mercury will likely need cut another player to make room for Bonner on their roster. Phoenix currently has 12 players on its roster, and WNBA teams are capped at 12.
