Man shot outside food market on east side of Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS — A man was shot outside a food market on the east side of Indianapolis Monday night.

In a media briefing, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Night Watch Captain Don Weilhammer said officers were called to 3702 North Market Street — which is the listed address for Supermercado Rio Grande on Google Maps — on a report of a person shot. When police arrived at the scene, they located a man with injuries consistent with gunshot wounds.

IMPD indicated that medics transported the victim from the scene to a local hospital in stable condition after the shooting.

At this point in their investigation of the incident, detectives believe the shooting stemmed from some sort of disturbance involving multiple individuals. Police reported that a group of two or three young people were seen running from the scene after the shooting.

IMPD has not yet determined the ages of the individuals that ran from the scene, though police have indicated that some of them may have been juveniles. IMPD indicated that it has not yet located the individuals, so investigators have not been able to verify their ages.

“I’m going to echo exactly what (IMPD Chief Chris Bailey) already said,” Weilhammer said during Monday’s media briefing. “Parents, it’s your responsibility to raise your kids and to know what they’re up to and what they’re doing.”

Police are still actively gathering and reviewing video from cameras that may have captured footage of the shooting. Weilhammer indicated that detectives have had a difficult time communicating with individuals who potentially witnessed the shooting because most of the people who were in the area at the time of the shooting were Haitian Creole-speaking.
