Mebane’s city government posted a warning on Facebook stating that the Lake Michael Spillway Project coffer dam “could fail” as a result of Chantal’s heavy rains.
The city says that people with homes in the area that would be flooded if the dam were to fail have been told to evacuate their homes “out of an abundance of caution” by the Mebane Police Department, Mebane Fire Department and Alamance County Sheriff’s Office.
The Mebane Arts and Community Center on 633 Corregidor Street is being used as a temporary emergency shelter.
People living in the Tupelo Junction Subdivision and Retriever Lane have also been notified, despite their homes falling out of the area that would flood if the dam were to fail.
A voluntary evacuation order is also in place for other areas downstream of Lake Michael, including Lake Michael Way and Broad Oak Drive.
The city says that if no one from Mebane police, Mebane fire or the ACSO has visited your home, then your home is not at risk of flooding due to a dam failure.
Anyone with questions should contact the Mebane Emergency Operations Center at (919) 304-9235.
