Gov. Josh Stein visits Mebane after Tropical Storm Chantal floods Alamance County, killing 1

MEBANE, N.C. (WGHP) — The governor of North Carolina is scheduled to survey storm-damaged Alamance County on Tuesday.

On Monday, the Alamance County Board of Commissioners issued a state of emergency amid power outages and flooding. Power and utilities are being restored across the county. The Haw River crested at 32 feet on Sunday, the second-highest level on record, flooding homes and cutting off some neighborhoods in the eastern part of the county.

“At Lake Michael in Mebane, high water levels raised concerns about the integrity of the dam, leading to voluntary evacuations of residents downstream. We will continue to monitor conditions and urge everyone to use caution as water levels recede,” county officials said. “Damage assessments are ongoing, and more information about assistance programs will be shared as it becomes available.”

One person was confirmed to have died in Alamance County due to the weather, with many more being rescued. Another person died in Orange County.

The governor is expected around 11:45 a.m. and his remarks can be viewed in the video player above.
