Authorities with the Ville Platte Police Department say the shooting happened in an apartment on Soileau and Edward Knotoe Thomas Junior Street on June 25. When detectives arrived on scene, they found Labrie with a gunshot wound to the chest. Labrie was transported to a local hospital where he later died.
News 10 spoke with Labrie’s stepmother, who wishes to remain anonymous. She says the family wants answers.
“We have a four-year-old that said they saw everything, said what happened, and nothing is still not done, the guy is still on the loose,” said Labrie’s stepmother.
Labrie’s stepmother says Labrie was with a family member at the time of the shooting and was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
“He just loved the kids,” said Labrie’s stepmother. “Because that’s where he was, he was with a family member with a little boy, just enjoying the little boy, and this happened.”
The family says they will always remember Kayne for being a kid with a big smile and big heart. They say Kayne was just months away from starting his senior year at Ville Platte High School.
“He’s really going to be missed by his friends, his brothers, his older brothers, and his dad,” said Labrie’s stepmother. “I’m going to miss him too, I’m not his real mom, but I’m still his stepmom, and we were together all the time.”
Labrie’s stepmother says she wants justice to be made in his death and urges other parents to always be aware of their children’s surroundings.
“We done laid him to rest but now it’s time to seek justice,” said Labrie’s stepmother. “Always know what they’re doing, make sure you don’t have guns in your house, a little kid getting hurt and you never know because you never checked to see if they had guns in the house, kids are playing with guns now like it’s a toy and it’s not.”
No arrests have been made in the shooting as of now. If anyone has information that could help on the investigation, you are asked to contact the Ville Platte Police Department at 337-363-1313.
