19-year-old boy tragically killed after using rope swing in a Catawba County lake

CALDWELL COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A 19-year-old boy is dead after drowning in a lake on the Fourth of July, according to the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office.

On Friday, deputies responded to a possible drowning incident near Southlakes Drive in the Grace Chapel community. This is adjacent to Lake Hickory.

Witnesses said a 19-year-old boy from Lenoir was using a rope swing when he went into the water and didn’t resurface.

Hickory Fire Department personnel found the boy and began life-saving efforts. He was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, officials said.

“Sheriff Kevin Bean and the staff of the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office extends its condolences to the family and friends of the victim,” the Sheriff’s Office posted on Facebook.
