Today at approximately 3:13 p.m., officers with the Opelousas Police Department responded to a report of a disturbance at a residence located in the 900 block of Bernice Street.

Officials said they determined the incident involved multiple females engaged in a confrontation.

According to authorities, during the altercation an unidentified female discharged a single gunshot for reasons that remain unclear at this time.

Officials said the female who fired the shot was still inside the residence. Officers safely removed the reporting parties from the home and attempted to establish contact with the individual, who had reportedly locked herself in a room.

Out of an abundance of caution, officers secured the perimeter and requested the assistance of OPD SWAT personnel.

A officials said a review of surveillance footage revealed that the suspect had exited the residence through a rear door while officers were focused on evacuating other occupants and securing the scene.

No injuries have been reported in connection with this incident. However, due to the limited information provided by witnesses, several aspects of the event remain under investigation.
