It happened just before 1:45 p.m. near Callahan Falls, according to the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators said an ATV driven by a man had “overturned in some water” and that a woman passenger was unable to get out.
“Laurel County Coroner Doug Dowling pronounced the female passenger dead at the scene,” deputies wrote in a news release around 5 p.m. on Friday.
Authorities said the identity of the woman who died would be released after her next of kin had been notified.
The apparent drowning remains under investigation.
