New 'grab and geaux' spot offering breakfast and lunch opening in Baton Rouge
BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — A new place to eat offering Caribbean and Cajun cuisine is opening in Baton Rouge.

61 on the Geaux Cafe on Scenic Highway is holding its soft opening on Monday, July 7, followed by a grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony a week later at 10 a.m., according to Executive Chef and Co-Owner, Michelle Coverson.

The new eatery is taking over a spot that used to be a convenience store. Coverson said it is located about three blocks before the turn to Zachary and not too far from the ExxonMobil Poly Plant.

She said not much was changed except for a new coat of paint on the inside and outside of the building.

The executive chef said they will be serving breakfast and lunch items.

“The best description is if Picadilly and Billy’s had a baby with a Caribbean,” Coverson said.

For breakfast, guests can order creamy cheese grits layered with scrambled eggs, a sausage patty, bacon, Manda sausage, and chicken topped with green onion along with their house-made hot sauce. Hot breakfast plates, breakfast sandwiches, omelets, waffles, and shrimp will also be available.

Coverson also highlighted their “Cinnageaux’s,” which is her spin on cinnamon rolls.

A lunch menu shows what will be available on different days.

61 on the geaux will offer breakfast and lunch menu options in the capital city.

The co-owner said there will be a lunch special every day, and all full plates will come with an entree, two sides, bread, and a free can of soda.

When guests arrive, they will walk through a buffet line, pay for their food, and either dine in or take it out. The co-owner said online ordering and catering will also be available.

A “grab and geaux” section will be set up where guests can get an assortment of items, including homemade chicken salad, tuna salad, and salmon salad in half pint and pint sizes.

There will also be green salads, banana pudding, artisan lemonade, sandwiches, fruit-infused wildcrafted sea moss gel from Lyfestyle Naturals, and sliced cakes from Lindsey & Co. Bakery.

61 on the Geaux Cafe will be open from 4 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Coverson said they will be opening another location in Mid City in late fall.

Entrepreneurs Shon Robinson and Carlton Mack are working with Coverson on this joint venture.
