LL Cool J won’t perform at Wawa Welcome America amid ongoing strikes

(WPHL) — American rapper, actor, and two-time Grammy Award winner, LL Cool J, is not “crossing the picket line” at the 4th of July Wawa Welcome America concert in Philadelphia in solidarity with the ongoing District Council 33 strike.

“I understand there’s a lot going on in Philadelphia right now, and, you know, I never, ever, ever want to disappoint my fans and especially in Philadelphia. You owe me too much, but there’s absolutely no way that I could perform, cross a picket line, and pick up money when I know that people are out there fighting for a living wage. I’m not doing that. You know what I’m saying? I’ve been coming to Philly my whole life. You know, I have respect for the city and this. And, of course. And, I hope, I hope, I hope that, you know, the mayor and the city can make a deal. I hope it works out. I’m still gonna come to filming in case it works out. I’m gonna be in town, y’all. But, I’m just letting you know, I’m not going to cross a picket line and perform for money when people are hurt. That’s it. So love, y’all. I’m on my way to Philly, and please look,” said LL Cool J in a video on Instagram.

Mayor Cherrelle L. Parker said she spoke to the rapper about his decision not to perform.

“I am aware that LL Cool J has decided not to perform at Wawa Welcome America’s July 4th Concert tomorrow evening on the parkway. I spoke personally with LL Cool J today. I respect his decision and understand his desire to see the city unified. He is always welcome in Philadelphia.”
Mayor Cherelle L. Parker

In a statement, DC 33 President Greg Boulware applauded LL Cool J for his decision to support workers’ rights.
