Fireworks safety tips for Fourth of July celebrations

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) – Local fire officials and doctors are reminding residents to put safety first when it comes to fireworks as the Fourth of July approaches.

While fireworks are a staple of Independence Day celebrations, they also pose serious risks. According to the Baton Rouge Fire Department, fireworks cause more than 31,000 fires nationwide each year.

“Sparklers seem like a small, not-really-booming firework, but they cause the most injuries,” said BRFD spokesperson Curt Monte. “Those burn at 1,200 degrees, and they’re putting them in children’s hands.”

Monte recommends that adults supervise all fireworks use, even with items that seem harmless. He emphasized that the safest option is to attend a professional show, but if residents do choose to light their own, they should do so only in open, legal areas—and always have a bucket of water or hose nearby.

Dr. Jeffrey Littleton, a general surgeon at Baton Rouge General, said their emergency department typically sees a surge in firework-related injuries this time of year.

“If it’s a minor burn, run cool water over it and keep it clean with soap and water,” Littleton said. “Apply antibiotic ointment. But if it’s a severe burn, seek medical attention immediately—our Baton Rouge Burn Center is here to help.”

After lighting fireworks, Monte urges residents to allow all remnants to fully burn out before disposal.

“What goes up must come down,” he said. “A lot of times, those fireworks are still burning. Let them burn out, pick them up, put them in a metal can, and fill it with water.”

Officials also remind the public that fireworks are illegal in many cities across Louisiana. Before lighting up the sky, check with your local government to ensure you’re following the law.

Whether you’re at a backyard barbecue or enjoying a block party, local experts say a few safety steps can help prevent a celebration from turning into a tragedy.
