Around 6:10 p.m., the New Orleans Fire Department was called to the scene on Kings Canyon Drive. Fire crews arrived at 6:18 p.m. to find that the flames had spread to the attic causing part of the roof to collapse.
A second alarm was called at 6:32 p.m. NOFD firefighters were able to rescue five dogs and two cats from the home. They were given to their owners in stable condition.
They said the residents were not home at the time of the fire.
The investigation determined the fire was accidentally caused during plumbing work being done behind a wall and extended vertically into the attic space.
NOFD firefighters were able to get the flames under control by 7:24 p.m. and kept the fire from spreading to nearby homes.
