Usually, we turn to the depths of the internet for our myth-busting missions. However, this time, the claim came straight from inside the CW33 family. Our very own producer, Jace Opel, swears by a watermelon-picking hack passed down in his family.
Here’s the claim: If a watermelon has a yellow or orange spot — known as a field spot — it’s a sign the melon will be sweet and delicious. But if it has no spot or a pale white one, you might be in for a bland bite.
Naturally, we had to see if this fruity folklore checks out.
We grabbed a few watermelons with varying spot colors and sliced them open right. At first glance, the white-spotted melon looked juicier — tricking us into thinking it would taste better. But after a few bites, it became clear the flavor was as flat as a bad dad joke.
Meanwhile, the melon with the yellow spot? Sweet, juicy and everything a watermelon should be.
So, Jace’s family hack is officially… Verified!
Next time you’re standing in the produce aisle wondering which watermelon to choose, look for that golden spot. Your taste buds will thank you.
