Sophomores Seb Cave and Frazer Jones will be playing as amateurs in the last of the four major golf championships. Both players come to the United States from England.
To qualify, players must finish in the top five at one of the four final qualifying locations: Burnham & Berrow, Dundonald Links, Royal Cinque Ports, and West Lancashire, totaling 20 places in the 153rd Open up for grabs.
Cave had a strong first round of -5 at Royal Cinque Ports. He finished fourth overall at even par to qualify. Jones also finished fourth in his qualifier at Burnham & Berrow. His -7 score was fueled by four straight birdies on the back nine of round two.
This season, Cave made history for the 49ers with his single-season stroke average record at 70.67. He was the team’s highest finisher (12th) at the NCAA Regionals with a -2. At the American Athletic Conference Championship, Cave finished third with a -11 that led the Niners to a conference championship.
Jones competed in four tournaments this season for Charlotte and played a key role in the AAC Championship and NCAA Regionals. At the Bremerton Regional, Jones was the second Charlotte finisher behind Cave with a +3.
The Open is at the Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland from July 17-20.
