According to Chicago police, the gunfire erupted just before 1 a.m. Wednesday in the 12000 block of South LaSalle Street in West Pullman.
Officers said the victim, a man who is believed to be between 20 and 25 years of age, was inside a vehicle in the area when a dark colored vehicle approached.
Police said an individual inside the SUV then pulled out a gun and opened fire from the car before fleeing the scene.
The victim suffered a gunshot wound to his head and was taken to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Currently, it is unclear what led to the shooting and officers say no arrests have been made.
Following an investigation, officers said a gun was recovered on the scene.
Authorities have not identified the individual killed.
It was the second deadly drive-by reported by Chicago police overnight.
The first unfolded around 11:30 p.m. in the 100 block of West 79th Street in Greater Grand Crossing.
