NEW ORLEANS — When the 33rd overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft was announced, Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum said, “Sion James, Duke University.”

The night was also a big one for the Tulane men’s basketball program, where James spent the first four years of his college basketball career.

“Sion has done a great job. He’s got his degree from Tulane and helped us come here and build this program. He’s always going to be an alumnus of Tulane and part of our basketball family. So, I was just as excited for him being drafted as my son that day. I was screaming and jumping up for him because he’s really worked and deserves that,” said Tulane head basketball coach Ron Hunter.

Ron Hunter considers Sion James a rare basketball talent.

His work ethic on the court led to constant improvement and 107 starts in four years.

His relentless effort in the classroom led to a Bachelor of Science in Management from Tulane University’s Freeman School of Business.

“If you put student athlete, you put it in the Webster’s Dictionary, his picture would show up. He is a quality young person on and off the court. I hate to say he does everything right, but he does everything right,” said Hunter.

James used his final year of eligibility to play basketball at Duke, and the Blue Devils were 30-2 when he was in the starting lineup.

“When I talked to Charlotte the other day, one of the things I told him, I said, you know, I don’t know if he will have a long career for you, but if he’s not having a long career for you, he’ll be the President of the United States. I’ve always said that, that’s how much I think of this young man,” added Hunter.

Sion James will always be a part of the New Orleans community, and at Tulane, he will serve as a great example of what could happen when talent meets discipline.

“It’s great that our guys can sit there and they can see what Sion has done and understand that, you know, you can go to a place for three or four years and stay there and have an opportunity,” said Hunter.

While at Tulane, James served as co-President of the Tulane University Student Athletic Advisory Committee. He was also Chair of the American Athletic Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Sion James’s debut with the Hornets will come on July 11th in their summer league opener against the Jazz. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
