ER doctor explains how you can stay safe in the heat this holiday weekend

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Temperatures are rising to dangerous levels, and if you have outdoor plans this holiday weekend, it is important to take steps to stay cool.

Even if you spend time in the water, the sun can still lead to a heat-related illness. Keep an eye out for those around you who may be displaying symptoms.

“People have confusion, and they may have seizures,” said Dr. Jeremy Johnson, an emergency medicine specialist at Crestwood Medical Center. “They’re going to stop sweating, which seems a little counterintuitive if you’re very hot, and at that point in time, that becomes a medical emergency and you really need to call 911 and get them to the nearest emergency department as soon as possible.”

Excessive sweating, dizziness and nausea are the early signs of heat-related illnesses. Johnson said prevention is key to avoiding heat stroke.

“Staying hydrated,” Johnson said. “It’s drinking plenty of fluids before this happens, and it’s really identifying those high-risk populations: younger children and older adults, those patients with chronic medical conditions, and people who work outside, especially in the heat.”

Seeking out shade will help keep your body cooler, and it will protect your skin. Even on an overcast day, sunscreen is a necessity.

“We will see patients who do have severe sunburns,” Johnson said. “Like most things, you have to treat the symptoms, such as pain control. And if you have it bad enough, treating them just like a burn.”

Even if it is labeled “water resistant,” sunscreen should be reapplied frequently, including every time you get out of the water.

Repeated exposure to UV rays can lead to premature aging and increase your risk of developing skin cancer. The Centers for Disease Control recommend wearing at least SPF 15.
