Northwestern State University will host a screening of the award-winning documentary “Ancestral Artistry: The Influence of Africans & Creoles of Color on Louisiana Architecture.” According to the website, the film explores a centuries-old legacy rooted in craftsmanship, culture, and resilience, and how enslaved West Africans contributed heavily to Louisiana’s architecture.
The film follows three master craftsmen — Jeff Poree, Darryl Reeves, and the late Teddy Pierre. The film “reminds viewers that architecture is not just about buildings—it’s about people, memory, and the stories we choose to preserve.”
The screening will be held in Magale Recital Hall on Friday, July 18, starting at 7:00 p.m., followed by a panel discussion. The event will begin with a sponsor’s reception featuring artifacts made by early Louisiana craftsmen of color, starting at 5:45 p.m.
Tickets can be purchased at Eventbrite. If you would like to watch the trailer for Ancestral Artistry, visit their website, louisianaarchitecture.org.
