The official cause of death has not been released.
Martin, a respected figure in Gaston County, dedicated nearly two decades to public service, eight years on the City Council, and about 10 years as Belmont’s mayor. His legacy includes helping shape the city’s downtown revitalization, supporting recreational spaces like Kevin Loftin Riverfront Park, and strengthening community spirit through hands-on involvement.
In June 2023, Martin stepped down from his role as mayor due to personal health reasons. At the time, he called his time in office “an honor and privilege,” saying he would always cherish his years of service.
Charlie was exactly the type of man that made you proud to be a Gaston County resident. He cared passionately about the people in his community and was always willing to get involved — whether that meant coaching youth baseball, serving on various boards and committees or lending his voice on Friday nights to South Point High School football games. He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.
