MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — The Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) is reminding the public to stay safe while cooking on the grill this upcoming Fourth of July holiday weekend after a home caught on fire Sunday.
Fire officials say the fire likely started from a grill and electrical wires that were on the back deck of the home. No one was hurt.
MCFRS Public Information Officer Pete Piringer shared grill safety tips in hopes of preventing another incident like this from happening. He said this information is especially important with the Fourth of July only a few days away.
“Certainly, they should only be used outdoors,” Piringer said. “We prefer that you use them away from any kind of structure. Keep children and pets at least three feet away; create that circle of safety. Keep the grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and from the trays that are below the grill, for that matter, and never leave the grill unattended.
Piringer said MCFRS responds to more grill-related fires in July than any other month.
Data from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) shows that gas and charcoal grills cause an annual average of 1,500 structure fires and 4,200 outdoor fires in or on residential properties.
