MARKSVILLE, La. (WNTZ) — Louisiana State Police are continuing to investigate a fatal officer-involved shooting earlier this month involving the Marksville Police Department, authorities announced Monday.
The incident occurred on June 15 around 4:50 p.m. on Laurel Street in Marksville. According to preliminary findings from the Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations, Marksville officers were responding to reports of shots fired in the area when they encountered a man. During that encounter, a physical struggle broke out, and the man armed himself with a firearm.
An officer then shot the man, State Police said. Officers rendered aid until emergency medical services arrived. The man was taken to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Both officers involved in the incident sustained minor injuries and were treated and released.
Louisiana State Police remain the lead agency investigating the shooting and are working in coordination with the Avoyelles Parish District Attorney’s Office.
Authorities are urging anyone with information, photos, or video related to the incident to contact State Police detectives. Anonymous tips can be submitted through the Louisiana State Police online reporting system at lsp.org by clicking “Report Suspicious or Criminal Activity” or by calling the LSP Fusion Center Hotline at 1-800-434-8007.
Further updates will be released as the investigation progresses.
