ISP upping enforcement as I-465 speed limit increases

INDIANAPOLIS — The speed limit on I-465 encircling Indianapolis is about to go up.

Indiana Department of Transportation crews will start to replace the speed limit signs on July 1, increasing the speed limit from 55 mph to 65 mph on the majority of I-465.

Different parts of I-465 will change at different times. Take a look at this graphic to find out when each section is set to increase the speed limit.

The only section that will not go up to 65 mph, is the far northwest corner of the loop. INDOT Strategic Communications Director Natalie Garrett said this is because this area merges with I-865 and is a sharp turn on the highway.

”It’s a tight turn and we just want to keep people safe there in that area,” Garrett said.

As the speed limit goes up, Indiana State Police troopers will be watching. 

”We’re actually upping our enforcement efforts with this increase because we recognize the dangers of all of traffic going even faster than it already does,” said ISP Sgt. John Perrine.

Just because the speed limit is going up 10 miles an hour, Perrine said that troopers won’t be changing their threshold for pulling drivers over. 

”They’re still going to be stopping cars at the same egregious speed that they were regardless of whether the speed limit was 55 or 65,” Perrine said.

The speed limit change is apart of House Bill 1461. The bill also includes provisions around updates to roads and infrastructure around the state.
